CAN YOU GROW SEEDS IN NORMAL COMPOST?

If sowing seeds in a pots or containers, we would advise against multi-purpose compost (see further down in this article for details) due to it’s potential detrimental effects. Compost for germinating seeds is the correct compost because it’s specifically created for that purpose. Seed composts can also help reduce the number of failed germinations during seed sowing since the mix used has a higher success rate, and the young plants generated will have strong roots and potential longer life as a result of the excellent start they’ll get.

DO I NEED SPECIAL COMPOSTS FOR SEEDS?

Yes, seed composts are ideal potting mixes for beginning plants. If seedlings are put straight into a seed-growing mix, they will receive less fertiliser than multi purpose composts or general potting composts. This is ideal as it means that the delicate roots of your newly germinated seedlings are not damaged by the higher levels of fertiliser.

CAN I PLANT SEEDS IN PEAT-FREE COMPOST?

The answer is yes, peat free seed compost is suitable to be used as a seed planting or sewing medium for seeds. However, all purpose, multi purpose or garden compost should not be confused with seed compost. Any type of compost can be designed to be peat free, but seed sowing compost is designed to support sowing seed and support young plants straight from the seed packet.

CAN I USE ANY COMPOST FOR SEEDS?
