What is enriched biochar?

Biochar is not just charcoal, biochar is a stable form of charcoal created from organic materials that have been heated in a low-oxygen, high temperatures environment. It’s packed full of nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that plants need to thrive. The material itself is highly porous and aids in water retention and nutrient cycling within the soil. This means it helps keep moisture in the soil longer, reducing the need for frequent watering. Additionally, it increases aeration of the soil allowing for better root growth and healthier plants overall. Plus, as an added bonus, enriched biochar does wonders to reduce nutrient runoff into waterways which helps keep our planet healthy too. Carbon Gold biochar is not just biochar – it also contains natural biology and beneficial bacteria to improve your garden without using nasty chemicals.

Additionally, its ability to retain nutrients makes fertilizing less necessary while still giving your plants enough nourishment they need. Finally, because of its high porosity level biochar encourages microbial activity by providing them with an ideal environment where they can flourish – leading to overall healthier gardens! Remember that biochar is a one off application as it does not break down for centuries, it also contains natural beneficial biology which will replicate in your soil naturally

Can I use too much biochar in my soil?

There are a few things that you have to remember when you use biochar. Some plants do not like biochar amended soil as it has a soil pH of around 9 and is quite alkaline, so make sure that the plants grown in the area do not require ericaceous compost.

Can biochar be used instead of peat moss?

No, Biochar is not a replacement for compost. Carbon Gold do offer a compost range which is made of plant material, (All Purpose and Seed Compost) as well as being peat free it also contains our special biochar formulation. But if you want to use our enriched biochar range (Soil Improver, Tree Soil Improver and Lawn Improver) then you will need to mix it with either existing compost or soil. It is very simple to apply biochar. You can either pop a small amount of the Soil Improver into the into the seed drills and lightly mix. This is the quickest and easiest way to improve soil quality directly around the plant roots. and quickly revitalize poor soil. If you which to improve the soil properties by adding biochar in your garden soil then we would recommend around 10% by soil volume will be sufficient. It may seem quite an expensive to add biochar, however it is free from harmful chemicals and is a one off application. It enables the soil microbes to replicate naturally which in turn will improve plant health.

Its not just about what you can see on the soil surface its also about making a healthy soil, and what is hidden in the terra preta soils. There are major benefits in adding biochar to the soil residue. By adding biochar to your soil will not only help with increasing the beneficial soil microbes naturally, it will enhance your plant growth and will give you health soil for many years to come as well as improve drainage, oxygen supply to the plant roots, and generally improving soil fertility without the use of chemical fertiliser. Biochar amended soils are also a prime way of reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide, greenhouse gas, and nitrous oxide emissions as well.
