April 30 2009: Back to the
Future – Presentation by Sue McDougall to Globe-Lufpig
Conference, European Parliament, Brussels.
In discussions about climate change, the finger of blame is usually pointed at
heavy industry, the transport sector and at energy generation. The emissions
generated by agriculture are often overlooked. The truth is that around half
of all emissions between 1850 and 1980 came from agriculture. These arose not
just from the inroads that cultivation made on natural forest both temperate
and tropical, on woodlands and even the clearance of hedges but also from the
change in agricultural practices. The first synthetic nitrogen fertilisers were
made in the early 1900s and as agriculture became more dependent on their usage,
soils were correspondingly depleted of their humus content. Whereas soils commonly
held 30 to 40 tonnes a hectare of carbon in the form of humus, the figure for
non organic farms can be as little as 5 to 10 tonnes a hectare. Download
